Captain Paul Pena, SMA Class of 2000, gave the ultimate sacrifice when he was killed in

action in Afghanistan Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Paul attended the Academy for six years, participated in many activities and graduated
with highest honors. After graduating from SMA, Paul entered the United States Military
Academy at West Point, graduating in 2004. Following graduation from West Point, Paul was
commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry, U.S. Army. He had attained the rank of
Captain and was serving in the 82nd Airborne Division at the time of his death. He had
previously served a tour in Iraq in 2006-2007 and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009.
A tree on the Academy campus was dedicated to the memory of CPT Paul W. Pena May 1.
The tree is located in the center of the main parking lot, in front of the school library.
The plaque was donated by the Canyon Lake Area Blue Star Mothers.
