Coach Sherry Spaar returns to the San Marcos Academy coaching staff to begin her third year as the
head swimming coach. Spaar is a second timer to SMA, having first coaching the SMA swim team 17 years ago
while her son attended the middle school. Upon her return, Coach Spaar brings over 25 years experience
with her. Her career spans aquatics management, serving as an athletic director and coaching and teaching
elementary through high school age athletes in swimming, basketball and physical education.
Coach Spaar previously coached at the Masters School of San Marcos where she was the athletic director,
P.E. teacher and a very close part of the TMS family. In 2013, she made the decision to step away from
holding a full time position for TMS school to take on her ultimate goal, the opening of her own business,
iSwim4Life, a swim school in San Marcos, for which she is owner and operator.
A proud resident of San Marcos for 20 plus years, Coach Spaar enjoys having a way to give back to her community
by providing full scholarship ISR self-rescue swimming lessons to all first responders and active military
families. Her time away from the pool is spent working out, hiking the San Marcos trails with her dog Roxi
and vacationing in Ouray, Colorado, where her Mom, Donnalee Brown, has retired.
Coach Spaar is most proud of her two children, Heather Blue, age 24, and Rocky Blue, age 29, and the
upbringing in sports her parents provided her. She says she has modeled her coaching after her dad,
Bill Spaar, who passed away in 2014. She sees him as
her “all time life-coach” who, to this day, still holds unbroken records in the Sports Hall
of Fame, McDaniel College, Westminster, Maryland.
