San Marcos Academy - Ways to Give
Cash gifts are immediately available to the Academy for both donor designated or undesignated
purposes. Cash gifts tend to be the most common means of philanthropy. Cash contributions are
simple and tax-deductible.
Gifts of Securities, Real Estate and Personal Property
Transferring securities, either stocks or bonds, allows you to make a gift to the Academy and
receive a charitable deduction equal to the full fair market value. You may also avoid paying
a capital gains tax on your charitable contribution.
Gifts of real estate can have benefits for both the donor and the recipient. You may give real
estate as a current gift and receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of
the gift. Gifts must meet certain criteria in order to be accepted by the Academy.
Planned Gifts and Bequests
Charitable estate planning is your way of making a difference in the lives of Academy
students through your will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity or other
plan. Charitable Remainder Trusts, Gift Annuities, Charitable Lead Trusts and other life
income plans offer substantial tax benefits. Gifts of life insurance allow donors to
contribute assets no longer needed for family security.
For more information on bequests, including sample language, please refer to our
Pledges (Commitment of Intent to Make a Gift)
Campaign credit will be given for pledges paid within a three-year period. Commitment gifts are
usually designated to a specific fund or program; there are 3 ways to make a commitment of intent;
- Periodic cash gift – making a gift by sending in or e-mailing a commitment form to the Academy.
- Authorization by credit card
- Electronic Funds Transfer.
Many companies offer matching gift programs to encourage employees to make charitable contributions.
Check with your employer regarding matching gift programs.
Memorials and Tributes
Through a memorial or tribute, you have the opportunity to recognize those who have made an impact
on your life. This type of gift is a sincere way to celebrate the life and accomplishments of a
relative, friend, teacher or student.
Gifts may be given on-line through the Academy's web site.

Endowment Gifts create a source of permanent support, generating annual income to fund general or specific
needs. Named endowments are created with gifts of $25,000 or more.
Gifts in Kind
Gifts in kind is a kind of charitable giving in which, instead of giving money to buy needed goods
and services, the goods and services themselves are given. By law, SMA cannot provide a donor with
the “dollar value” of gifts in kind – this value needs to be professionally assessed
and certified elsewhere, and that is the responsibility of the donor.
From Endowed Scholarships to Excellence Funds,
every gift makes a difference.
Take this opportunity to support SMA students.
If you are interested in discussing any of these options further, we will be happy to meet with you, your
spouse, and financial advisor.
